How do I add a porthole?
- Touch and hold an empty spot on your Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit in the top corner, then Add Widget.
- Search for Bathysphere and choose Porthole.
- Swipe to pick a size (small, medium or large), then tap Add Widget.
- Tap Done.
To change how deep a porthole looks, touch and hold it and choose Edit Widget.
Why does a creature cross between widgets?
Portholes in the same Home Screen row can share the same water. Touch and hold each porthole, choose Edit Widget, give them the same Depth, and set Position on Home Screen to where each one really sits, for example Top left and Top right.
Once the positions match your layout, a creature that swims out of one porthole appears in the next, passing behind your app icons on the way. A porthole set to On its own is a private window and doesn't share. The Portholes tab in the app has a setup guide.
Why do I see the same creature as my friend?
There is one ocean for everyone. Bathysphere works out the sea from the current UTC time, and every copy of the app does the same arithmetic. Nothing is sent between phones and no server is involved.
So portholes set to the same depth and position show the same creature at the same moment, wherever they are on Earth.
What is Calm motion?
In Settings (the gear icon), Motion has three choices. Smooth plays the full animation. Calm plays the same scenes with fewer frames, to save power. Automatic plays Smooth and switches to Calm whenever Low Power Mode is on.
If Reduce Motion is on in your iPhone's Accessibility settings, portholes show a still scene instead.
How do I see the Leviathan?
The Leviathan passes every porthole once per UTC day, whatever depth the porthole is set to. Open the Almanac to see today's time, and tap Remind me for a local notification.
Be at a porthole when it comes, and tap the glass to photograph it. The inline Depth Log widget on your Lock Screen also shows when it is due.
How do I reset the journal?
There is no reset inside the app. To start a fresh journal, delete Bathysphere and install it again.
That permanently erases your journal and settings. They exist only on your iPhone, and we keep no copy.
